FUNGSI GERUND
Gerund yang dibentuk dari kata kerj + ING berfungsi sebagai:
Pokok Kalimat (subjek)
Contoh
Smoking is bad for health.
Walking makes you healthy.
Singing is my hobby.
Travelling is a lot of fun
Cooking is one of my hobbies.
Does smoking make people sick?
Perhatikan kata yang tercetak tebal adalah pokok kalimat. Pokok kalimat tidak harus satu kata tapi juga bisa lebih.
Contoh:
Saving money in a bank is better.
Jogging in the morning will be good for your health.
Writing articles about my experiences will give me a lot of benefits.
Perhatikan, kata-kata yang digaris bawahi adalah pokok kalimat dan kata yang berbentuk ING adalah gerund yang berfungsi sebagai subjeck.
GERUND SETELAH KATA KERJA TERTENTU
Kata kerja harus berbentuk ING apabila dipakai setelah kata-kata kerja berikut ini:
ENJOY, FINISH, AVOID, POSTPONE, CONSIDER, ADMIT, PRACTICE, PREFER, QUIT, RESIST, DELAY, SUGGEST, MIND, DENY, RECALL, RISK, ADMIT, IMAGINE, RESIST, COMPLETE, dan masih ada beberapa lagi yang belum disebut di sini.
Contoh Gerund setelah kata-kata kerja di atas:
- She enjoys swimming on her own.
- I haven't finished drinking my coffee.
- I think I have to postpone going to Bali.
- Please consider accepting this job.
- He won't admit stealing the money.
- You must practice reading and writing.
- We prefer going by bus.
- You must stop smoking if you want to be healthy.
- Would you mind not smoking here?
- We have to avoid eating this if you want to stay slim.
Setelah kata-kata kerja berikut bisa diikuti oleh gerund atau infinitive:
REMEMBER, FORGET, STOP, LIKE, HATE, ADVISE, BEGIN, START, INTEND, CONTINUE, DISLIKE

Kata kerja NEED juga dapat diikuti oleh ING form kata kerja, namun artinya menjadi passive.
Contoh:
- This wall needs painting. (Tembok ini perlu dicat.)
- I think your car needs servicing. (Mobil Anda perlu diservis.)
- This problem need solving as soon as possible. (perlu dipecahkan)
Gerund setalah prepositions: in, on, after, before, of, upon, besides dan prepositional phrases seperti due to, because of, akin to, dan lainnya.
- After going home, he went to his friend's house.
- Before eating, you'd better wash your hands.
- Besides working in a restaurant, I also teach English.
- Due to not knowing the way, he got lost.
- Because of having no money, I decided to stay home.

Tambahkan lah ING pada satu kata atau beberapa kata yang ada dalam kalimat.
Contoh : Lutfi loves fish in the sea. -->> Lutfi lovesfishing in the sea.
- Cook is my hobby.
- Fitri enjoys sing English songs.
- My children hate go on foot to the market.
- I prefer take a train but because it's always crowded on the train, I consider go by bus.
- Do you intend study abroad after graduate from senior high school?
